Many of us worry about what our houses will look like if we leave our four-legged children home alone for a few hours without any supervision. Our pets love us and want to spend every waking moment by our sides. However, when we leave, our pets are not afraid to take out their anger on things like pillows, garbage cans, blankets, carpet and anything else that our dogs think we are attached to.
Our pups do these things because they experience separation anxiety while we are gone. When a dog experiences this, they might howl, cry, or chew their way through our most prized possessions. Is it possible to keep this from happening?
Well, yes, in way of course. You can distract your dog from realizing you are gone. Like a child being left with the babysitter, the best option to keep them from throwing a temper tantrum is to put them to bed. Itâs always a great idea to take your dog for a fast paced walk or a run throughout the neighborhood. Anything you can do to make the dogâs energy level decrease before you leave will help. Also, just like how some of us feel great after a good workout, your dog will too. Your dog will have that same exhilarating, happy, content feeling. You should be able to leave your dog without him or her automatically throwing themselves into a black abyss. If you are gone for an extended period of time, hiring a dog walker that can bring your dog out on a long walk will help keep the desire to chew at bay.
Dogs also tend to get into mischief when they are bored. As long as your dog has plenty of his or her own toys, your dog will stay away from your toys. Your dogâs toys will also distract them from the fact that you are not there. Dogs think just as we do. How would you feel if you were locked up in a house all day with nothing to do. Iâm sure you would start tearing up the furniture too. To keep them stimulated, a good idea is to hide, hide, hide! Hide a treat in the toys and then hide the toys! Dogs have great noses and will have a fun time trying to find the toy containing the treat. Then they will spend even more time trying to get the treat out of the toy. Try to use some other toys as well such as squeaky toys, ropes, and chew toys.
You will find that with less boredom, the more behaved your dog. Just with these few tricks, you will noticeably see a different in your dogâs behavior.
